WordCamp in Davao!!

The core group of organizers of WordCamp Philippines 2008 are all from (or based in) Davao City. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that, before the main event on the 6th of September, there will also be WordCamp Davao!

Matt Mullenweg, the founder of Automattic, will be in Manila and in Davao to join us for the two WordCamps.

The Davao leg of this highly-anticipated event will be on 4 September 2008 (Thursday), from 6:00 to around 10:00 PM. We’re still negotiating with sponsors for the venue — to keep tabs, I’ll announce it on the official site as soon as we have a final arrangement. Venue: Bryan’s Grill & Café in Palm Village (beside Bo. Obrero).

Inspired by the activeness of local bloggers, Ted Padova — Davao’s resident Adobe expert and co-founder of ApoVisions.com — has come up with a plan to organize high-value seminars primarily for Mindanao bloggers. It’ll be a series of teach-ins that will arm Dabawenyos with gainful knowledge in various I.T. fields.

Of course, Ted is more than willing to impart his expertise in Adobe products, particularly Acrobat, PhotoShop, InDesign, and others. For my part, I have volunteered to contribute my meager knowledge in WordPress and CSS.

Davao Cyber Expo 2008

The organizers of this year’s Davao Cyber Expo invited me to give a talk on WordPress, which I delivered last 5 July 2008 at the NCCC Mall. I’d like to thank Christopher Cubos for having given me this opportunity to continue my advocacy of promoting the use of WordPress here in Davao.

Happy 5th, WordPress!

WordPress turns 5

The blogging platform and content management system that I’ve come to love is now 5 years old!!!

Congratulations to Matt Mullenweg and Automattic for all these years of awesometastic WordPress development and community-building — not to mention, for giving us Akismet as well. You guys have made my blogging life so much easier.

Happy Birthday, WordPress! 8)

PinoyTech.TV This is the logo of an upcoming Filipino tech vlogPinoyTech.TV. It’ll have reportage on IT industry current events, personality and company profiles, features on IT investment destinations, tech jobs postings, and a bit more.

This is my newest venture, and I’m happy to announce that my friends and fellow bloggers, Winston Almendras and Aileen Apolo, have agreed to be part of the initiating group of PinoyTech.TV.

Ratings plugin

Again I’ve removed PostReach ClickComments, a 3rd-party service. That’s because I found an “in-house” WordPress plugin that does the job: WP-PostRatings. I’ve deployed this plugin on Davao Delicious and Mindanao Bloggers. It’s kinda heavy, but manageable.

WordPress Pinoys

Just joined a forum: WordPress Pinoys, a community of Filipino WordPress bloggers. Might be a good place to get to know other WP enthusiasts like myself. For noobs, I’m sure there are topics on WordPress technical stuff. Aside from the potential blog promotions, I hope to also be able to contribute my meager WP know-how. :)

WordPress t-shirts

WordPress T-ShirtSee this?

I still have three of these WordPress t-shirts, left over from the 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit. My colleagues in The Usual Suspects are going to whip up another online contest to raffle off these collectibles. Watch out for it! I’ll announce it right here soon.

Thing is, they’re all women’s tees, size small, so maybe the contest’s gonna be limited to girls. Well, including bloggers’ girlfriends. ;)

Thanks to Matt and Maya for the t-shirts!!!

New plugins 11/2007

Some plugins are headed for the trash bin, as I’ve discovered ones that work better with WP2.3. There’s one that I liked right away: a plugin by the great Alex King, called Articles. It lets you output a list of featured posts anywhere you want to put it. Takes some work, but well worth the effort!

Blogie’s blogs now on WP2.3!

WordPress 2.3 at last! I’m talking about ALL my blogs running on WordPress — the 4 blogs that I personally author, my father’s Gospel Reflections, the blog aggregator, and several others that I maintain for other folks. Whew! But it really wasn’t all that painful. It took me just under an hour (including snacks & bathroom breaks) to upgrade all of those blogs to the latest version of this awesome blogging platform.

Ah, there’s one blog that I haven’t yet upgraded: MindanaoBloggers. The reason being, I’m not quite sure yet if the plugin that runs the Mindanao Blog Directory will function well in the WP2.3 environment. I have yet to do some test runs on that. Read on»
