Top 100 Mindanao blogs

Winston Almendras and I had an idea to come up with Mindanao’s own top 100 blogs right before the New Year. And so now we have it, thanks to Winston’s programming prowess. The first publication is online at MindanaoBloggers.com. In the future, we’ll have an updated list on its own page.

We got the idea after Janette Toral published the Top 100 Philippine blogs earlier. For the Mindanao list, the blogs are part of the Mindanao Blogs Directory. The purpose of having our own Top 100 is to allow Mindanao bloggers to gauge their blogs’ traffic rankings against their peers’. I’d like to emphasize that the ranking is based solely on measurable blog traffic. The two most influential metrics used are Technorati and Feedburner.

Unfortunately, the rest of this post has been lost forever, due to a server crash…

It’s now time to call for bloggers for the 3rd leg of the ongoing Davao Food Trip. The next stop will be at Belly’s Grill, on Quimpo Boulevard. This restaurant is best known for their grilled wild scallops, as well as their barbecue offerings.

The owners of Belly’s Grill will be accommodating 10 bloggers on 11 January 2008 (Friday), lunchtime. Interested to join us? Please register below.

Registration is now closed.

Blog Year 2007

Today, the last day of 2007, I was reflecting on the events of the last 12 months. My realization: they were good months. Not exactly as I’d planned, but highly satisfactory.

My greatest achievement for this year was the very successful conduct of the first-ever Mindanao Bloggers Summit in October. Surrounded by bloggers and supporters all throughout, I had no doubts that we could pull it off. What I hadn’t counted on was the way MindanaoBloggers.com turned out to be so viral. Long after the Summit was concluded, more and more bloggers from Mindanao are participating in the community.

The Big G looms even bigger…

BEFORE the recently-concluded You Got Blogged! Review-a-Blog Competition was over, I received a strange inquiry from a blogger who had wanted to participate. Let’s call him “Manny”. Manny asked me if he could link to the contest sponsors with a nofollow attribute within the link tags. I told him if he did that, it would invalidate his entry. He didn’t participate.

The reason for Manny’s wanting to use the nofollow attribute was his fear of a possible “retaliation” by Google on his blog’s PageRank. He said he was afraid Google might penalize him for providing links. ••• Read on»

Davao Food Trip badge

Notice the new Davao Food Trip badge? Jehzeel Laurente did it for me. Jehz is a very talented Dabawenyo who is (unfortunately) working in the nation’s capital. He is a software programmer and web developer. He’s also my blog-buddy and business partner (whom I have yet to meet in person). Thanks Jehz!!!

Christmas in Davao

It’s been quite some time since I last participated in a tag game. So I thought I’d jump in and do one, which I got from Aileen Apolo. It’s about why it’s so much better to spend Christmas in the Philippines than overseas. (Did I get that right, Aileen?).

What to do: Just share a warm, fuzzy Pinoy Christmas story or anecdote or photo or whatever it is you love about Christmas (as a Filipino). Link to Aileen’s blog post so she can share your story in her compilation. Copy & paste the instructions (this paragraph) and then leave a comment on Aileen’s blog post so she can check out yours. ••• Read on»

Davao bloggers food trip

Why do we do this? First of all, it’s fun!

But the truth is, those of us who blog about Davao and what’s great about our city have a passion. We are driven to produce quality and down-to-earth content about our beloved hometown. So now we have a new bloggers’ gimmick: the Davao Food Trip. The idea is for a group of bloggers to have lunch or dinner (or even just merienda) at a restaurant that will sponsor us, and enjoy the food, ambience and company of fellow enthusiasts.

Dissing the Senator

There are probably as many ways to judge how good a Web hosting provider is as there are providers. OK, I exaggerate. But there really are innumerable hosting companies out there. And there simply is not one set of guidelines that any of us can refer to with any degree of reliability.

That said, I’d like to give you one piece of advice. I would caution you if you came across Lunarpages. I do host with them — but only because I’m locked in for a year. I had two hosting accounts with them initially, and I was fortunate enough to have been able to cancel the second one and avail of the money-back guarantee. Thing is, they withheld a part of the total amount that I’d paid. ••• Read on»
