Cebu Pacific sponsors WordCamp

Cebu Pacific The Philippines’ budget carrier that revolutionized the flying habits of Filipinos has come on board as one of the biggest sponsors of WordCamp Philippines 2008. Cebu Pacific Air is generously providing airline tickets for an exciting contest which we will launch at WordCamp in Manila.

The general idea is to get bloggers to write about domestic (or even international) destinations where Cebu Pacific has regular flights. Aside from promoting the airline, one of the main objectives of this contest, to be called the Cebu Pacific Blogging Challenge, is to increase awareness of the various tourist and business destinations in the country.

WordPress 2.6 released!

A month ahead of schedule, Matt Mullenweg has announced the release of the newest version of WordPress.org: WordPress 2.6. It’s a major iteration, since the last version was only at 2.5.1.

This is because WordPress has taken huge steps forward in terms of becoming a serious content management system (and not just a blogging engine). For example, 2.6 features post versioning — WP saves older versions of your post in your admin area, and you can compare various versions and even revert to older copies of your post.

Inspired by the activeness of local bloggers, Ted Padova — Davao’s resident Adobe expert and co-founder of ApoVisions.com — has come up with a plan to organize high-value seminars primarily for Mindanao bloggers. It’ll be a series of teach-ins that will arm Dabawenyos with gainful knowledge in various I.T. fields.

Of course, Ted is more than willing to impart his expertise in Adobe products, particularly Acrobat, PhotoShop, InDesign, and others. For my part, I have volunteered to contribute my meager knowledge in WordPress and CSS.

WordCamp sponsorship now open

It’s very encouraging, to say the least, the response we’ve been getting from supporters of WordCamp Philippines. For example, on the very same day that we made our first announcement regarding this international event, I got an interview request from Inquirer.net (subsequent article came out here). They can sure sniff out a scoop!

And before we knew it, WordPressers from all over began to express their desire to volunteer and be part of this major effort. Sponsors didn’t lag behind either. In only a couple of weeks (and the event is slated not less than 3 months hence), we had i.ph: The Domain for Individuals and WazzupManila letting us know that they were coming on board as sponsors.

WordPress 2.5 is out!

WordPress 2.5Well, it’s finally here! WordPress version 2.5 has been released today. That prompt that has been familiar since WP2.3 is now patiently waiting on the dashboard: “A new version of Wordpress is available! Please update now.

Not that I’m going to upgrade right away. Although I did beta-test it, and had gotten to see a lot of the bug fixes and stuff, I’m still wary of shifting to the new version. Read on»

And I’m back…

I apologize for the many days when my blogs were down. This and most of my other blogs were taken offline due to a hardware foul-up at my previous host’s supposedly ‘industry strength’ data center. What a dismaying, depressing week it was for me.

The main reason why I chose Hostican.com for my VPS account was their “excellent” customer-service support. Boy, was I sorely mistaken. Only after 2 days did they inform me that the hard drive my VPS was residing in had failed, and only after much frantic emailing by yours truly. Funny how, in their mass-mailed message, they kept emphasizing that the disk drive they were using was of an expensive variety. Now wouldn’t you take better care of an expensive piece of equipment?

And there were no backups at all! After another volley of emails from me, Hostican finally replied that they couldn’t recover any usable data whatsoever from the errant hard disk. But… aren’t backups supposed to be kept in separate drives? Nada. Zilch. Nai. Wala. Read on»

Personal blog #5

Davao Delicious. That’s the name of my newest personal blog. Oh, when I say “personal” it doesn’t necessarily mean for blogging about personal or private stuff (come to think of it, I don’t really do that online…). It means I own the weblog and nobody else writes for it but me. This is blog #5, Blogie Blog being the first, then Ang Dabawenyo, IT talks!, and Mission: 6-Pack Abs. Of course there’s Maru’s Space… but that’s in Japanese! Read on»
