Off to Hong Kong again
Ever since I became active in the blogosphere, especially in the advocacy efforts of the Mindanao Bloggers Community, I’ve been getting invited to conferences, seminars, workshops and similar events. Most of them relate to Internet and cyber-media / journalism issues. There were the speaking engagements in local conferences, then came opportunities to contribute to larger-scale events, such as national conventions.
I’ve also brought WordCamp to the Philippines, as well as spearhead the organizing of the annual Mindanao Bloggers Summit… but being part of even bigger undertakings is so much more rewarding and enriching.
In January 2010, I was invited to Washington, D.C. by the U.S. Department of State for a conference and a series of meetings that dealt with the question on Internet freedom of expression. This was actually thanks to a speaking engagement I had in Hong Kong in November 2009, where a representative of the State Department was in attendance.

I feel very privileged to have had all those opportunities to contribute and share my experiences, and best of all, to meet with like-minded individuals, many of whom have made my life all the more fulfilling. Getting to know the first blogger and cyber-activist of China, for example, has inspired me to forge on and be more determined to follow through on my chosen advocacy. Peace & development in Mindanao.
And now I’m going back for yet another event in Hong Kong, this time for the Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrGIF). At that week-long event this June, I hope to delve deeper into concerns of media (especially the online variety), freedom, major movements in the Internet. I will do my best to contribute to the discussions and to learn from the entire experience. I know this sentiment is shared by the APrGIF organizers, that we will all come away with realizable goals and meaningful solutions. Whatever those may be, I shall blog about, naturally.
