Twilight and on to nothingness
At the risk of offending fans of the movie Twilight, I’m afraid I must give it two thumbs down. I went in with no expectations (I haven’t read the book), and with no intention at all of comparing it with Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, but I was still sorely disappointed.
Acting-wise, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart didn’t do so badly. However, Pattinson was just way too sullen. I blame that on the director, Catherine Hardwicke. She failed to develop the Edward Cullen character. He had no depth, only misery. He had no hopes, only an unexplained compassion for the human, Bella Swan. (Makes me wonder now what all the fanaticism over Pattinson is all about. He looks good. Period.)
And the Cullen family? Sure, you could get away with selling a friendly neighborhood vampire family to a movie audience. But come on… the Brady bunch?? They were behaving like they couldn’t harm a fly, but doing it so artificially. The whole cooking-Italian-for-the-human-guest scene was just too incredulous.
Don’t authors, directors and producers realize yet that making movies/novels about vampires will forever be weighed against Anne Rice’s creation? Through the vampire trilogy (and beyond), Anne Rice has created an entirely inimitable world of nosferati that anything after her simply cannot measure up. (OK, I did compare, but only after watching Twilight.) Even Bram Stoker’s own opus pales in comparison, I daresay.
(The movies made out of the vampire trilogy, however, are an entirely different story. But I digress.)
Twilight was all hype and very little substance. Some nice scenes (like that romantic interlude in the forest), and a few one-liners that were seemingly pithy but wouldn’t impress anyone except maybe fifteen-year-olds… but the whole film just doesn’t cut it, in my honest opinion.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Twilight. I’ve been meaning to watch this movie but only after I finish reading the much talked about book (I borrowed a copy from an officemate). I got intrigued by all the hype given to it. After reading your review here, I’m tempted to drop everything today to read the book and finally watch the movie and maybe review it myself. Hehe.
