New and emerging blogs
Janette Toral has embarked on an ambitious writing project called Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs in 2007. Janette aims to collate the blog picks of her extensive network of colleagues, friends and fellow bloggers, and subsequently come up with the top ten. This is my contribution to this worthwhile undertaking.
The list is arranged alphabetically. It was difficult enough choosing the 10 blogs, I didn’t want the burden of trying to rank them. Besides, these blogs belong to varying genres, so that ordering them would be unfair and meaningless. By the way, only new blogs (created no earlier than August 2006) are supposed to be included in this review.
- • Alternat1ve
- Marc Javellana’s advocacy of alternative energy solutions is, in my opinion, a worthy endeavor. The blog is serious and thought-provoking. I’m behind Marc in his efforts to disseminate information on environmental concerns, in the hopes of challenging traditional thinking on energy. Alternat1ve exemplifies what an advocacy blog should be.
- • An Apple a Day
- This is Google Philippines’ Aileen Apolo blogging about her innumerable excursions out of the Philippine capital and into interesting destinations around the country. What enviable experiences she has! I enjoy reading this blog because it veers away from the usual touristy lingo. Aileen also blogs about her family and other personal stuff, which lends a certain ‘homey-ness’ to the blog. Sometimes stuff about her work also peek through.
- • Dabawenya Jud!
- Jojie Alcantara, although late in coming, was bound to eventually shine in the blogosphere. Her brand new blog celebrates her love of Davao in particular and Mindanao in general. At this writing, she has but a few posts — all the more that I and hordes of others are salivating over the mere thought of her next update. Jojie conquered the imagination of Davaoeños when she began publishing Witerary. Watch out, blogosphere!!
- • Esofthub’s Web Finds
- This blogger provides a slew of intriguing discoveries off of the Web. The blog is a hodge-podge of information that musn’t be entirely judged for its usefulness as much as for its entertainment value. On the other hand, Esofthub’s Web finds do at times point you to the right direction, especially when you’re a layman looking for SEO, blogging, even management tips on the Web.
- • Letters to Mikee
- While I can’t relate to Mark Maglana and his father figure in this blog, I can certainly appreciate the value of his online correspondence. Mark’s blog contains advice, musings, a father’s fears and apprehensions — all messages for his as-yet infant son. Young and future fathers alike will definitely find this blog a revealing read. (Mothers too, even just for getting an insight into a man’s head.) In my opinion, this type of blogging is still unique and is virtually unexplored.
- • PureBlogging
- Of all blogs I’ve seen that talk about blogging, I find this one to be the best yet. Its interface is straightforward and uncluttered, and information is well-presented. The blogger, it seems, makes sure to provide the nitty-gritty of the blogging experience. Not just mere how-tos. I also appreciate the owner’s efforts in creating a community of authors / contributors. Best part is, I’ve picked up very useful lessons in optimizing my own blogs via PureBlogging.com.
- • Strangeweed
- Abe Fernandez is a self-professed corporate slave, and the character of his blog evinces it. I find Strangeweed set apart from run-of-the-mill personal blogs: sometimes hilarious, at times confusing, often entertaining. Abe’s seeming indecision as to the ‘genre’ of his blog — blogging? IT? personal?… — is actually what makes it interesting.
- • Studies in Technopreneurship
- Another blog by Mark Maglana. This is one blog that will surely endure, even if Mark stopped updating it. The content would always find readers even for generations to come. Mark blogs about his academic venture into the world of entrepreneurship, specifically in the arena of information technology and industry.
- • TechMambo
- This blog offers an indispensable service to I.T. industry watchers, as well as to users of high-tech stuff. Its objective is to profile and review I.T. companies and their products / services. With the plethora of online services available today, for example, it’s good that such a service as TechMambo exists. Bookmark this blog if you’re set on keeping tabs on the I.T. industry at large.
- • The Word God Spells
- This is my father’s (Momong Robillo) blog, where he posts his daily Gospel reflections and prayers. Being a poet at heart, he even pens quatrains on the Gospel reading of the day, everyday. Not to blow my own (or my father’s) horn, but this blog contains insightful and purposeful thoughts on the Word of God. I’d like very much for more people to see The Word God Spells and have the blog touch their lives somehow.

Hey Blogie! I finally started a real blog (with real blogging software). It’s at:

Let me know if you’re here in Cebu!
Congratulations, Manny!! Checked out your blog and, I must say, I find it difficult to pry my eyes off of it. Doesn’t mean I agree with what you’re saying 100%, but I certainly find your content — at the very least — an eye-opening, intellectual exercise.
