Dabawenyos, vote wisely this May!

I rarely attempt to endorse political candidates — partly because of my jaded attitude towards Philippine politics, and partly because politicians rarely fail to disappoint. However, I’m going out on a limb here to campaign for Ang Kapatiran Party’s Mr. Jess Paredes for senator of the Republic. Aside from my father’s willing support of this candidate, Mr. Paredes’ platform has convinced me to vote for him.

I have taken it upon myself to quote his handbill here. I was especially drawn to #3.

JESS PAREDES, as Senator (God-willing), shall:

  1. Bring to an end the politics of pork barrel, celebrity politics, deception, deceit, hypocrisy, dishonesty, patronage, pay-off [sic], unprincipled compromises, expansion of political family dynasties, and the politics of guns, goons and gold.
  2. Renew Philippine politics and provide a moral dimension into the political process.
  3. Prove that politics can become an effective means for the integral development and total well-being of all Filipinos rather than a tool for the advancement of a privileged few.
  4. Prove that politics is the medium through which we love our neighbor and promote justice, peace, poverty alleviation and sustainable economic development.
  5. Build a nation of character.

Philippine politics has shown time and again that virtually nobody is beyond corruptibility. Moreover, I have always held the notion that anybody who aspires to public office ultimately falls into the trapo trap. But, the Greek philosopher Plato’s words came back to me:

Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber.

Couldn’t resist the jibe, sorry. ;) But seriously: Politics, after all, is not just for those in government. It is the participation of the people in governance. So, if I don’t actively participate, then I wouldn’t have the right to complain about trapos, now would I?

For those of you who’d like to view it, Mr. Paredes’ campaign blog is at http://zparedes.wordpress.com.
